"...No governor ever spent as much money as we spent this year in real dollars... on transportation improvements. We will continue to do that for the next two to three years," Governor Davis told KTVU Political Editor Randy Shandobil during an interview in October 2002.
On January 8th in his State of the State Address, Governor Davis said he would "direct his agencies to accelerate freeway and public transit projects by one year."
On January 10th, Governor Davis proposed a total of $1.7 billion in cuts to transportation funding. In his May revision of the budget, he modified his proposal and reduced the cuts to transportation to an estimated $1.5 billion.
After months of negotiations, the Legislature finally approved a 'compromise budget' with over a billion dollars in cuts to transportation. On August 2nd, Gov. Davis signed the 2003-2004 budget.
Transit projects that are currently under construction will continue. But according to Randy Rentschler of the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, new projects will be put on hold as a result of the cuts.
A bill to raise the state gas tax failed in the Legislature. However, a bill that would raise Bay Area bridge tolls to $3 to fund transit projects has moved to the governor's desk for his signature.
On October 1st, the higher car license fee went into effect.
